The Festival of Revelation: Rabbi Benamozegh on Shabuot and Sinai

Rabbi Elia BenamozeghSynopsis
Why does the Torah never say outright that Shabuot commemorates the revelation at Sinai?
In a sweeping and provocative passage from his monumental Torah commentary Em LaMiqra, 19th-century Moroccan-Italian sage Rabbi Elia Benamozegh confronts that striking silence head-on. With philological precision, legal reasoning, and a masterful command of Tanakh and rabbinic tradition, he argues that Shabuot is not merely the festival of harvest, but inseparably the festival of revelation.
Rabbi Elia Benamozegh was an Italian Rabbi, Dayyan, and scholar who emerged from an esteemed Moroccan lineage. He was born in Livorno, Italy in 1823. His journey led him to become a Rabbi and a Professor of Theology at 23. He wrote prolifically on Judaism, philosophy, and beyond, across several languages. His intellectual rigour and commitment to integrating Torah and worldly knowledge marked him as a pivotal figure in Jewish intellectual history, striving to advance a harmonious understanding of tradition and progress until his death in 1900.
