Synopsis

In 'Rise and Decline of Civilizations: Lessons for the Jewish People,' Shalom Salomon Wald shows how 23 historians of the last 2400 years – from the Greek Thucydides to the American Jared Diamond – explain the rise, decline and fall of civilizations. Wald’s “thought experiment,” as he calls it, posits that the reasons these historians have identified often apply to the Jewish civilization as well. Wald argues that world Jewry presently enjoys an unprecedented “Golden Age,” but warns that all Golden Ages in world history have one day come to an end. He contends that the Jews have the means to halt decline if they so wish.
