Umberto Cassuto

Umberto Cassuto, also known as Moshe David Cassuto, was a renowned Italian rabbi and biblical scholar born in Florence, Italy, in 1883. He served as the Chief Rabbi of Florence and later moved to Jerusalem where he became a professor at the Hebrew University. Cassuto's contributions to biblical scholarship and Jewish history were profound, particularly through his critiques of the documentary hypothesis, which challenged the prevailing theories about the composition of the Pentateuch. He passed away in 1951 in Jerusalem. His works continue to influence students of the Hebrew Bible and Jewish studies, emphasizing a combination of traditional Jewish exegesis and critical scholarly methods. Cassuto's legacy is marked by his deep commitment to the integrity of the Hebrew text and his unique approach to biblical criticism, which sought to harmonize traditional Jewish teachings with modern scholarly research.
