Rabbi Yaakov Ibn Habib

Rabbi Yaakov ibn Habib (also known as Jacob ben Solomon ibn Habib) was a 15th-16th century rabbi and Talmudic scholar, born in Spain around 1445. Following the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492, he fled to Portugal and later settled in Salonika, then part of the Ottoman Empire. Rabbi ibn Habib is best known for his work on the Ein Yaakov, a collection of all the Aggadic material in the Talmud. He began this monumental work, which was completed by his son, Rabbi Levi ibn Habib (Rabbi Levi ben Habib). Rabbi Yaakov ibn Habib's contribution to Jewish scholarship is significant, as he sought to provide access to the ethical and moral teachings of the Talmud, distinct from the legalistic components.
