Shneur Zalman of Liadi

Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi (1745–1812), also known as the Alter Rebbe, was the founder of Chabad Lubavism, a branch of Hasidic Judaism. Born in Liozna, present-day Belarus, he was a disciple of Rabbi Dovber of Mezeritch, the successor of the Hasidic movement's founder, the Baal Shem Tov. Shneur Zalman established a unique philosophical approach that blends intellectual rigor with mystical spirituality, which is articulated in his seminal work, the Tanya. His teachings emphasize the importance of understanding and internalizing the tenets of Jewish faith through the mind as a pathway to the heart.
