William L. Shirer
William Lawrence Shirer was an American journalist and historian. He became famous for his broadcasts on CBS from Nazi Germany during the buildup to World War II and his book 'The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich,' which is a well-regarded chronicle of Nazi Germany. Born in 1904 in Chicago, Illinois, Shirer studied at Coe College in Iowa before embarking on a career in journalism that took him to Europe. In the 1930s and 1940s, he was stationed in Berlin and Vienna, allowing him firsthand observations of the political climate in Germany and Austria before and during the early years of World War II.
