Ruth R Wisse
Ruth R. Wisse is a professor emeritus at Harvard University, where she taught Yiddish literature and comparative literature. She was born in Czernowitz, Romania (now Chernivtsi, Ukraine), and immigrated to Canada during World War II. Wisse's academic career has been dedicated to the study of Jewish literature and the ways in which Jewish writers have responded to modernity and politics.
Wisse's scholarship also extends to the analysis of modern Jewish political thought, particularly the ways in which humor and culture have been used by Jewish communities as forms of resistance. She has written extensively on the subject, including works that explore the paradoxes of Jewish political and cultural circumstances. Her insights into the complexities of Jewish identity and survival strategies in hostile environments have made significant contributions to the field.
In addition to her academic work, Ruth R. Wisse has been an influential voice in public discourse, often writing and speaking on issues related to Jewish politics, culture, and education. Her work not only spans scholarly research but also includes commentary on contemporary issues, making her a prominent figure in both academic and popular circles.
