Michael Avi-Yonah
Michael Avi-Yonah was an Israeli historian and archaeologist, born in 1904 in Russia and immigrated to Palestine in 1924. He was a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and specialized in the archaeology and history of the Roman and Byzantine periods in Palestine. Avi-Yonah's work included the study of ancient maps, and he was instrumental in reconstructing the Madaba Map, a famous ancient mosaic map located in Jordan. His contributions to archaeology and history are noted for their depth and accuracy, helping to bridge the gap between historical records and archaeological findings. Avi-Yonah also contributed to the understanding of the cultural and historical impact of the Roman and Byzantine empires on the Levant. He authored numerous books and articles, making significant contributions to the fields of history and archaeology until his death in 1974.
