Richard H. Schwartz

Richard H. Schwartz, PhD, is a professor emeritus of mathematics at the College of Staten Island, which is part of the City University of New York (CUNY). He has been a leading advocate for vegetarianism and veganism for ethical, health, and environmental reasons for many years. Schwartz has written extensively on the intersection of Judaism and vegetarianism, aiming to show how these two traditions can support and enhance one another.

Schwartz's work in promoting vegetarianism as a way to express Jewish values of compassion has made him a prominent figure in discussions about ethical eating within the Jewish community. His book, 'Judaism and Vegetarianism,' explores various Jewish teachings that support vegetarianism and argues that adopting a vegetarian diet is one of the most effective actions one can take to improve our health, sustain the environment, and increase compassion to animals.

Beyond his work on vegetarianism, Schwartz has been actively involved in Jewish environmental groups and initiatives. He has contributed to various platforms and discussions that aim to integrate ecological concerns with Jewish life and practice. His efforts extend to addressing global issues such as climate change and resource conservation through the lens of Jewish ethics and values.
