Rutka Laskier
Rutka Laskier was a Jewish girl from Poland who is often referred to as the 'Polish Anne Frank'. She was born in 1929 in Bedzin, Poland, and during World War II, she wrote a diary that detailed her experiences and thoughts while living under Nazi occupation. Rutka's Notebook, as her diary is known, provides a poignant insight into the daily life of a young Jewish girl during the Holocaust.
Rutka's Notebook was written over a period of three months in 1943, when Rutka was just 14 years old. The diary was hidden away for over 60 years before being discovered and published. In her writings, Rutka documents the horrors she witnessed and the increasing peril faced by the Jewish community. Her entries are a mix of teenage concerns and the stark reality of living in a time of extreme persecution.
Tragically, Rutka Laskier was eventually captured by the Nazis and died in Auschwitz in 1943. Her diary, however, survived and serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of the Holocaust. It was not until 2006 that her notebook was recovered and later published, bringing to light her compelling voice from the past.
