Shulem Deen
Shulem Deen is an American author and former Skverer Hasid. He is best known for his memoir 'All Who Go Do Not Return,' which details his departure from the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. The book won the 2015 National Jewish Book Award for Memoir and Autobiography, and it has been praised for its candid and poignant exploration of faith and identity.
Before leaving the Hasidic community, Deen was a devout follower and lived in New Square, New York, a village known for its strict religious adherence. His journey away from his faith and community began with questioning the beliefs he had grown up with, which eventually led to his estrangement from his family and former life.
Since leaving the Hasidic community, Shulem Deen has become an advocate for others facing similar struggles and has written extensively on issues of faith, community, and identity. His writings have appeared in various prominent publications, including The New York Times, The New Republic, and Salon. He also serves as a board member for Footsteps, an organization that assists people who wish to explore the world beyond their ultra-Orthodox communities.
