Aryeh Carmell
Aryeh Carmell was a distinguished British Orthodox rabbi, educator, and author, known for his contributions to Jewish thought and education. Born in London in 1917, he studied at Jews' College and the University of London, where he earned a degree in philosophy. His deep commitment to Jewish education and his intellectual pursuits led him to become a prominent figure in the Orthodox Jewish community.
Rabbi Carmell was closely associated with Rabbi Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler, and he helped to disseminate Rabbi Dessler's teachings through his writings and educational activities. He co-founded the Jerusalem-based institution for advanced Jewish studies, the Dvar Yerushalayim Yeshiva, which became a significant center for Torah study. Rabbi Carmell was also instrumental in establishing the Association of Orthodox Jewish Scientists and the journal 'Tradition', contributing significantly to the dialogue between science and Judaism.
His literary contributions include several influential works, such as 'Masterplan: Judaism – Its Programs, Meanings, Goals' and 'Challenge: Torah Views on Science and its Problems', which address the intersection of traditional Jewish thought and contemporary issues.
