Elijah ben Solomon Zalman
Elijah ben Solomon Zalman, also known as the Vilna Gaon or the Gra, was a prominent 18th-century rabbi, Talmudist, and Kabbalist. Born in 1720 in Sielec, then part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (now Belarus), he was recognized from an early age for his prodigious intellect in religious studies. The Vilna Gaon was largely self-taught and rarely left his home city of Vilnius, Lithuania. He was known for his stern opposition to the Hasidic movement, which he viewed as a threat to traditional Jewish scholarship and practice. His works and commentaries on Jewish law and the Hebrew Bible have had a profound and lasting impact on Jewish thought and are studied to this day.
