Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai
Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, often known by his acronym Rashbi, was a tannaitic sage in ancient Israel, said to have lived during the 2nd century CE. He is most famous for his purported authorship of the Zohar, the chief work of Kabbalah, Jewish mysticism. According to Jewish tradition, he was one of the most eminent disciples of Rabbi Akiva and is often attributed with miraculous powers and great piety. His teachings and literary contributions have had a profound impact on Jewish mysticism and Talmudic scholarship. He is celebrated annually on the Jewish holiday of Lag BaOmer, during which thousands of people gather at his tomb in Meron, Israel, to commemorate his life and teachings.
