Gustave Doré
Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré was a French artist, printmaker, illustrator, and sculptor. Doré worked primarily with wood engraving and steel engraving. He was born on January 6, 1832, in Strasbourg, France, and showed an early aptitude for drawing. Doré became very successful and was internationally recognized for his illustrations of major literary works. Among his most famous works are the illustrations for the Bible, Dante's Divine Comedy, Cervantes' Don Quixote, and Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. His illustrations for the Bible were particularly notable for their dramatic and evocative style, which brought the biblical narratives vividly to life.
