Rabbi Shmuel ben Meir (Rashbam)
Rabbi Shmuel ben Meir, known as Rashbam, was a distinguished French Tosafist and biblical commentator in the 12th century. He was the grandson of Rashi, one of Judaism's greatest commentators, and he continued the family tradition of profound Torah scholarship. Rashbam is renowned for his commentary on the Torah, which emphasizes the peshat, or plain meaning, of the text. This approach often led him to interpretations that differed from those of his grandfather, demonstrating his unique scholarly perspective. His works are included in the Mikraot Gedolot and are celebrated for their clarity and depth. Rashbam's commitment to the peshat has made his commentaries a vital resource for students and scholars seeking to understand the biblical text in its historical and literal context.
