Elias Tcherikower

Elias Tcherikower (1881-1943) was a historian and archivist who played a significant role in documenting Jewish history, particularly the history of pogroms in Eastern Europe. Born in Ukraine, Tcherikower was a co-founder of the Yiddish Scientific Institute (YIVO) along with Nokhem Shtif and others. His work primarily focused on the collection and analysis of historical documents and testimonies related to Jewish life and suffering.

Tcherikower's efforts were crucial in preserving the memory of the pogroms that swept through Ukraine and other parts of Eastern Europe during and after World War I. He meticulously gathered data, testimonies, and documents that shed light on the extent and nature of the violence against Jews during this period. His archival work has provided historians with invaluable resources for studying these tragic events.

Despite facing numerous challenges, including displacement and the threat of persecution, Tcherikower remained committed to his scholarly pursuits throughout his life. He continued his archival and historical work even after moving to the United States, where he died in 1943.
