Rabbi Shneor Zalman of Liadi

Rabbi Shneor Zalman of Liadi (1745-1812) was the founder of Chabad Chassidism, also known as Lubavitch, Habad, or Chabad. He was born in Liozna, present-day Belarus, and became a disciple of Rabbi Dovber of Mezeritch, the successor of the Baal Shem Tov, founder of the Hasidic movement. Rabbi Shneor Zalman established a new philosophy that bridges the intellectual and mystical aspects of Judaism, known as Chabad, an acronym for Chochmah, Binah, Da'at (Wisdom, Understanding, Knowledge). His works emphasize the importance of understanding and knowledge in the worship of God, a departure from the more emotional worship that characterized much of Hasidism at the time. Rabbi Shneor Zalman authored many works, the most famous being the Tanya, which is considered the written Torah of Chassidic philosophy. He also compiled the Shulchan Aruch HaRav, a code of Jewish law that is still widely studied and followed in Chabad communities today. His leadership and teachings have had a lasting impact on Jewish thought and continue to influence many, both within and outside the Chabad movement.
