David G Roskies

David G. Roskies is a prominent scholar in the field of Jewish literature and culture, specializing in Yiddish and Holocaust literature. He was born in 1948 in a displaced persons camp in Germany and raised in Montreal. Roskies earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University, where he studied under the guidance of Ruth Wisse and wrote his dissertation on modern Jewish literature.

Throughout his career, Roskies has served as a professor of Jewish literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, where he has taught since 1975. He has written extensively on the literary responses to the Holocaust and the role of memory in Jewish culture, contributing significantly to the understanding of Jewish literary traditions and their evolution over time.

Roskies is also known for his work on the folklore and cultural history of Eastern European Jews. He has authored and edited numerous books and articles that explore these themes, including 'The Literature of Destruction' and 'Night Words: A Midrash on the Holocaust'.
