Lucy S Dawidowicz
Lucy S. Dawidowicz (1915–1990) was an American historian and author who specialized in Jewish history, particularly the Holocaust and the Jewish experience in Eastern Europe. Born in New York City, she studied at Hunter College and Columbia University, and later continued her education in Eastern European Jewish studies at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, which was then located in Vilnius, Lithuania.
Dawidowicz was deeply involved in Jewish educational and cultural activities throughout her life. She worked at the YIVO Institute in New York and taught at Yeshiva University, Stanford University, and the Touro College. Her scholarship focused on the impact of the Holocaust, and she was known for her book 'The War Against the Jews: 1933–1945', which explores the implementation of the Final Solution.
Aside from her scholarly work, Dawidowicz was a vocal advocate for Jewish rights and historical memory. She wrote extensively on the need for accurate historical representation and was critical of both Soviet and Western engagements with Jewish history. Her works contribute significantly to the understanding of the Jewish experience during the 20th century, making her a key figure in Jewish historiography.
