James Strong

James Strong (1822–1894) was an American Methodist biblical scholar and educator, best known for his Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible. Strong was born in New York City and graduated as valedictorian from Wesleyan University in 1844. He later became a professor of exegetical theology at Drew Theological Seminary, where he spent much of his career.

Strong was deeply involved in the development of the Methodist Episcopal Church and played a significant role in the creation of the American Bible Union. His work on the Concordance began in 1890 and was completed in 1894. This monumental work lists every word in the King James Version of the Bible, providing a coded system linked to the original Hebrew and Greek words. It remains a vital tool for biblical scholars and laypersons interested in detailed study of the scripture.

Beyond his work on the Concordance, Strong was also involved in the creation of Strong's Theological Dictionary and the Cyclopaedia of Biblical, Theological, and Ecclesiastical Literature with John McClintock. His contributions to theological scholarship and education have left a lasting legacy in the field of religious studies.
