Marcus Jastrow
Marcus Jastrow was a renowned Polish-born American rabbi and scholar, born on June 5, 1829, in Rogasen, in the Grand Duchy of Posen, Prussia (now Rogoźno, Poland). He is best known for his work as a lexicographer and his contributions to Jewish studies. Jastrow pursued his education in Germany, where he received his Ph.D. from the University of Halle in 1855. He served as a rabbi in Warsaw and later moved to the United States during the 1860s, where he became a prominent rabbi in Philadelphia. Jastrow's scholarly work focused on the Talmud and Jewish liturgy, and he was deeply involved in the Jewish reform movements of his time. His efforts were instrumental in the development of modern Jewish religious thought and practice in America.
