Richard Glazar
Richard Glazar, born Richard Goldschmidt, was a Czech Jew who survived the Holocaust. Born in 1920 in Prague, he was deported to the Treblinka extermination camp during World War II. Glazar was one of the few survivors of Treblinka, having participated in the camp's uprising and subsequent escape in 1943.
After the war, Glazar settled in Czechoslovakia and later moved to Germany, where he worked as an economist. It was not until many years later that he began to speak publicly about his experiences, contributing to the documentation and understanding of the Holocaust. His memoir, 'Trap with a Green Fence: Survival in Treblinka', is a detailed account of his life in the camp, providing a crucial historical insight into the atrocities committed there.
Richard Glazar's contributions to Holocaust education and remembrance continued until his death in 1997. His works, particularly his memoir, remain significant for scholars and the general public, offering a deeply personal perspective on the survival and resistance of Jews in one of Nazi Germany's most notorious death camps.
